I'm glad to hear that you will be using OSSIM. OSSIM&uDig are my preferred Geo-OpenSource tools.
Do you have a work plan that you can share?
I'm curious about the interface to the C++ library, especially the way you will add new raster sources/exporters into OSSIM

In the repository we have a prototype of OSSIM and UDIG working together. But it is very bad because all the rendering is done in java. Right now the OSSIM team is making more complete JOSSIM bindings and implementing GEOAPI's GridCoverage and CoordinateReferenceSystem interfaces. Once they are done we should be able to display Rasters at native speeds.

Next we will add the ability to create new Image chains using GEF (eclipses Graphics Editing Framework).

Then (or before step 2) we are going to add OSGPlanet. So that is will display the maps rendered by udig.

I got it working and seems quite performant. But there are problems:

- OSSIM CS WKT parsing doesn't parse anything from EPSG database. Incomplete implementation, different names (with underscores), missing, etc. There are also no EPSG authority codes in OSSIM apart from EPSG:4326.

- jossim SWIG wrappers are rather incomplete, so you have to write C++ code (as viewcontroller project does)

- viewcontroller code only renders properly in WGS 84

This was a joint project with the OSSIM community; we were working on the uDig part and needed assistence building OSSIM on a range of platforms. The OSSIM team was too busy to help out so we are dropping this work.
