This appears to be a graphics card specific issue (I have personally seen it on slow laptops running 1.1.x - the solution was to hit refresh).

With the last update now the bug is changed...
- selection works for both line and polygon layers
- selection doesn't work for point layers, even if I press the refresh after selecting some features
