Description

File/Open Projects deals with directories but ignores directory shortcuts under XP. (Maybe symbolic links are supported in Linux etc. I'm not running that environment thus do not know. If not they should be too.) (Shortcuts do work in file system navigation, which deals with files rather than directories.) It would be good to support navigation via shortcuts.

I am not sure I understand the request; can you supply a screen snap showing where you expect navigational short cuts to be used? Are you talking in the file open dialog (cause that is platform specific?) or what ...

You no doubt know this, but for context: you can create a Windows shortcut to a file system object (.lnk file) by selecting the object in Windows Explorer, right clicking and selecting Create Shortcut, or alternatively selecting Copy and then right clicking somewhere else and selecting Paste Shortcut.

The standard Windows link library (comdlg32.dll, I believe) treats shortcuts as being the equivalents of the underlying file or directory types, so if you have a directory with a shortcut to a directory it will be listed and can be operated on like a real directory (e.g. double-clicked to navigate to that directory). (I realize that Java doesn't use comdlg32 and that this is a platform specific issue.)

uDig File > Open Project ignores lnk files.

I know FileDialog can be coerced into paying attention to them. See posted FileDialog image from Poseidon, which is an Eclipse application, versus uDig FileDialog image.

I thought this might be something fairly straightforward, but a bit of quick research suggests that it isn't.
