Rendering in polar sterographic

Description

I imported shapefiles for N America and Europe (http://www.cdc.gov/search.do?action=search&queryText=shapefiles&x=14&y=7). But they do not display completely. Parts of the layer dissapear an re-apepar depending on the zoom level or the panned position in the Map windows.

The map projection was NAD27 polar sterographic

Is there a problem with the size or number of vertices of the shapefile? Or is this a problem with the polar projection (by the way, it is needed fro circumpolar maps). This is a real problem for someone like me that works on circumpolar phenomena.

I've experienced the same issue with PostGIS layers, in particular the bc_voting_areas table in the workshop postgis data. RC10 was what I was using.

The postgis case is based on not being able to get an accurate bounds from PostGIS; we need a seperate jira issue here. We use ANALYSIS and random sampling in that order. We would like to reduce this to a database maintenance task ... or ask for a custom function to access the index (which has the information we need).

We cannot fix this problem until we have access to the real epsg database. In general polar sterographic seems to give us a lot of pain.

Having access to a real epsg database allows us to grab the extent for the projection; we can use this extent to clip data before it is displayed.

So now that we have epsg-hsql we could consider this - what would setting the clipping area based on the CoordinateReferenceSystem extent do?
