Description

This page should allow to define and test the properties of the email notification channel :

  • smtp host (empty by default, which means that Email channel disabled)
  • smtp port (25 by default)
  • use secure connection - "No" and "SSL" ("No" by default)
  • smtp username (empty by default)
  • smtp password (empty by default)
  • from address ("noreply@nowhere" by default)
  • email prefix ("[SONAR]" by default)

The "From address" field doesn't seem to be used at least with the GMail SMTP server.

Indeed "From address" is ignored by GMail SMTP server, if you have not configured "sending mail from a different address". Which is correct, because otherwise this is a security hole - allows to send an email from any address using GMail. And this can be mentioned in comments on page.

Also note that option "Use TLS" (taken from commons-email) really misleading :

  1. Methods setSSL(true) and setTLS(true) from commons-email in fact are opposite (see https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/EMAIL-105) :
    • with setTLS(true) - it enables the use of the STARTTLS command, so connection is initially non-encrypted and would be upgraded to encrypted (SSL/TLS) only after the STARTTLS command from client and if supported by server
    • with setSSL(true) - connection is encrypted (SSL/TLS) right from the start
  2. STARTTLS currently not usable without providing username/password, whereas should be (see https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/EMAIL-106)
  3. Moreover - JavaMail 1.4.2 (commons-email 1.2 depends on 1.4.1) provides new parameter "mail.smtp.starttls.required" in addition to "mail.smtp.starttls.enable", to make the client disconnect if the server doesn't support STARTTLS, so setSSL(true) seems more secure and preferable (see http://kb.mozillazine.org/Secure_connections_-_Thunderbird)

Summarizing - it's better to provide configuration parameter "Use secure connection" with options "No" and "SSL" for the moment. So we will be able to add option "STARTTLS" (command enable + required) in future if needed.

I know only SMTP Address but i amn't sure about SMTP Port. Currently i am using Hudson and it's mail system is working fine only with SMTP address. But Sonar is giving me the error. Could you please help me.org.apache.commons.mail.EmailException: Sending the email to the following server failed.

Most of the time, the default SMTP port is 25 but it's better to ask such question to the Sonar User mailing list.
