the plexus-container-default artifact expose the junit:junit artifact in compile scope, forcing junit on users runtime.

seems like this is another downsteam issue - http://jira.codehaus.org/browse/MRESOURCES-152 - this and other Maven plugins might be waiting for 1.5.6 to be released and available in public Maven repos
