Open Source Master Patient Index

Open Source Master Patient Index

Summary

Description

We have developed an open source Master Patient Index which is a system that allows health care organizations that need to exchange data to uniquely identify to which patient the data belongs to despite variations in the attributes that describe the patient. The matching is done using a matching algorithm for which the software provides a pluggable model so other algorithms can be transparently plugged into the system without effecting the rest of the system. The software has been developed in a generic way so that it can be applied to other tasks that require master data management. So, in situations where two organization have customer databases and want to merge their data, the software can be used for the integration process to resolve schema differences used to represent the data. The software has been developed using the Spring/Hibernate/EJB 3.0 libraries and there is active ongoing development. There are a bunch of developer registered on the project but there are only a few that are active. Part of the problem is the affilitiation of the project with the Open Health Tools community which does not provide a supportive environment for developers to get involved and contribute. The software went through extensive testing at the 2009 IHE Connectathon and passed all the tests in February this year.
