Our current web status display uses the Adobe Flex technology to display information from the GumTree server interactively (eg http://nbi.ansto.gov.au/quokka). However, due Flex uses Adobe Flash player, this status display service is unavailable to iPhone or other devices that do not have Flash installed.
In surveying other potential RIA solution, we have found Vaadin. It is a server side RIA solution which leverages GWT. Vaadin is coded in pure Java, and provides Eclipse plugin for development.

Initial testing of Vaadin on iPhone (using the Vaadin demo site) is no too positive. It is slow and does not behave similar to desktop browsers.
But we have found the iPhone support:
