Cannot update plugin (have to uninstall and then install the new version)

I'm running eclipse 3.5.1. I currently have installed:

The usual uninstall and install worked. Thought you would
want to know.

As described in the mailing list, you have two options:

1. Go to Install new software... and update from there.
2. Uninstall Groovy-Eclipse plugin and reinstall only the top-level Groovy-Eclipse feature (ignore the compiler features and the core patch feature). This will allow you to perform a software update.

Future versions of the update site will hide the non-top level features so new users will not be tempted to install the sub-features if they don't have to.

I'm facing similar issues. I had been using the snapshot update site, and no combination of install/uninstall worked for me. What did work was to uninstall Groovy-Eclipse, then add the milestone releases update site and install from there. I had to select the top-level Groovy Eclipse feature AND the JDT core patch (which then prompted me that it was already installed so it would be updated) before I could get the install to work.

Lyle, it seems like you did not fully uninstall the JDT core patch. If you start with groovy-eclipse completely uninstalled and then install only the top-level Groovy-Eclipse feature (as is now the only thing possible on the current snapshot update site), then you should not have any problems with future updates.
