Description

It would be nice if the web admin tool would have an option to export the current configuration, and another option to import the configuration. This would make remote upgrading easier, as well deploying a Geoserver config over multiple machines.

The config would need to include:

  • settings like character set etc.
  • catalog.xml
  • featuretype definitions

Currently no. You have to manually copy your data_dir. But that would be a nice feature, and I don't believe it would be all that hard to implement. If you put a 'wish' in the JIRA we can track it and not forget about this good idea.

I still like this idea. It's can't be implemented on 1.6.x really, so scheduling for 1.7.x. Assigning to you David to think about how to maybe handle it, with regards to a rest api, ect.

This would be a really nice feature to have. We have multiple developers working on their own Geoserver instances. It would be easier to share configurations if we could do an export/import.

Justin, I think at one point we had an "export configuration" command in the Wicket UI prototype. Not sure if that functionality can be salvaged somehow thought

The basic configuration (services/catalog) could be exported, but good luck finding all the config files from the various extensions (e..g, control flow, monitoring, and so on).
I don't believe we're in any position to do a full export, other than copying for good the entire data dir.

Yeah, we threw the idea around a bit. One of the things I would like to do with virtual services / local workspaces is be able to import/export a workspace, and have it be more or less self contained. But obviously it requires a bit more work to make workspaces a suitable container for everything, and as Andrea states there are many plugins/extensions that install files globally.

One thing I always thought would be cool is to have an official plugin class or manifest for extensions. Most true plugin frameworks have some notion of this. One of the things it could do is provide a list of all of its configuration files.
