PostGIS layer gives an error

Description

I added a new data store using GeoServer, and then previewed layer in OpenLayers.

I could not run the GetFeatureInfo request, and then when I tried to go back into the layer it had an error and "Reload Feature type...." at the bottom of the screen

This bug report is close to useless, PostGIS layers normally work just fine, so there must be odd and specific to your enviroment
Missing information:

  • geoserver version
  • java version
  • dump of the table structure (\d "tablename" in psql is fine)
  • actual error found in the logs
  • database schemas involved, user grants (if the user is not admin and the schema used is not "public")
