a small embeddable database with gpl licensing

i've used this on various projects. it is unique in that it is very small and stable. suggestion here is to add it as a persistent back end for geotools and hence geoserver.

I was going to look into hsql for geotools...
What are the pros/cons between the two. I have not started yet and would like to know which horse to place my money (well weekend) on.

This issue is a bit specific with 'perst'. Justin is working on a spatial h2 that we'll incorporate soon.
