Does this mean that for the 1.7.0 release one can't expect that KML height is working (correctly)? Since with 1.7.0-RC4 this seems to be broken. If this is not related, please comment, I'll open another issue then for KML height. Thanks!

That's right, KML Height support was removed from the main 1.7.x branch shortly after 1.7.0-RC3 was released.

For 1.7.0 we've decided to be a bit more conservative with new features in order to provide a more reliable release. The KML Height feature will not be included in 1.7.0, but is scheduled for 1.7.1. If you are interested in this feature, let me know and I can provide you with a .war file that includes it along with some other KML work that's being done. (Built from this branch in SVN: http://svn.codehaus.org/geoserver/branches/kml_improvements/)

David, thanks for replying so quickly! Yes, I'm interested in these improvements. If you can provide a .war file easily that would be great, otherwise I'll build one myself, but have to setup the environment on the system I'm working on now...
