FeatureType Editor shows nothing to edit

Description

When I select a feature (spearfish.stream) to edit, the screen " FeatureType Editor" shows nothing under the " FeatureType Editor / Edit Feature Type definition and schema" header.

The " Create New FeatureType" screen also shows no data below the header. This is apparently blocking the ability to access imported shapefile data. (Imported tables show in Demo topp:changesets but can not be accessed)

This happens when a jsp page fails to compile. Is there any stack trace in the tomcat logs or in the geoserver logs?
What jdk are you using? Not one of the free ones I hope (gcj, icedtea).

Tomcat status says "Apache Tomcat/5.5 1.6.0_03-b05 Sun Microsystems Inc. Linux 2.6.22-14-xen amd64". The geoserver.log for the FeatureType Editor is in the attachment.

The HTML created uses a "select" tag for the new field name. Can't type the name of the new field in that.

While using an alternate data dir, nothing was appearing in "FeatureType Editor" and "Create New FeatureType". After moving the versioning data_dir to Tomcat's data dir (and removing Tomcat GEOSERVER_DATA_DIR definitions), the Editor still is truncated while "Create New FeatureType" has returned to showing an empty pulldown for the new name field (see typeNew.do.htm attached file).

geoserver2.log has log from configuration where versioning data_dir has replaced "data" dir in system Tomcat geoserver directory. At 18:13:15 the Feature Editor produced a blank screen. At 18:20:10 a New feature screen showed an empty selection field for the name field.

Switched data directory contents back to the 1.6.0 data directory. Problem still present, so probably not related to versioning database.

Deleted versioning code. (gt2-postgis-versioned-2.4.0.jar net.opengis.wfsv-1.6.0.jar wfsv-1.6.0.jar)
Problem still present.

Version 1.6.x has not been supported for years. In 2.0.x the GUI has changed significantly too.
Please reopen if the bug is still reproducable against 2.0.x
