Description

Apparently we have already initial support for those two encodings, but no convinient way to expose them to the user.
It may be a format option:
...&format_options=encoding:simple

Afaik Google maps, Yahoo and probably OL do support those encodings already, so it would be a nice extra.

This is mostly done. However Tim Coulter and I were trying it out in OpenLayers and it was unclear whether or not it was loading properly or not (ie, it didn't work, but it wasn't clear whether it was a problem with openlayers or with geoserver.) Would love to revisit with someone who knows more about OpenLayers GeoRSS support.

Okay, choosing the format works now and I've done some cleanup to the structure of the feeds themselves. Some quick testing shows that Google Maps and Openlayers both are capable of loading polygons from the simple format. I've created a ticket about the GML encoding though; it's just a stub right now. Anyway, this issue (choosing the encoding) is resolved now.

All these issues have been in "resolved" state for at least one month (many of them, much more than that). Since no one has reopened them, I'm mass-switching them to closed state. Reopen if you feel the issue has not been addressed properly.
