Description

cloy v.
embafar

embafar v.
cloy

cloying adj.
embafador, embafós

embafador adj.
cloying

embafós adj.
cloying

Teníem això:
embafós
adj rich / stodgy

Però veig que la correspondència entre coy i embafar és completa.

I remember this coming up before so I did a search of my email. Here are the main points from the thread about 'embafós' from 2006:

Margarita suggested the entry 'embafós' with the English equivalent 'sickly sweet'.

Jaume commented: Una cosa embafosa o embafadora no és necessàriament dolça. Mireu la definició d'embafar:

embafar
v tr 1 Una menja o una beguda llevar l'apetit (d'algú), carregar-li l'estómac, per l'excés de dolçor, de greix o d'espessor.
2 fig Enutjar, una cosa, per l'excés d'artifici o la insistència.

Linda responded: Perhaps 'rich' and 'stodgy' might be good choices here. Segons l'OALD:

rich
containing a lot of fat, butter, eggs, etc. and making you feel full quickly: a rich creamy sauce, a rich chocolate cake

stodgy
heavy and making you feel very full: stodgy puddings

They both seem to correspond pretty well to the definition of 'embafós' Jaume provides.

Gill commented: And cloying? That came out of trying to find a translation for the verb embafar - to cloy? It is pretty obscure but I can't offhand think of a synonym.

I would agree with adding 'cloying' to the entry for 'embafós' but I would retain the other equivalents too as all the dictionary definitions I have found for 'cloying' suggest it to mean 'sickly sweet' which is actually the equivalent for 'embafós' that we originally had.

Another comment is that I feel 'cloying' is a different register to 'embafós' (it is marked as 'literary' in the Cambridge Learners' Dictionary and 'formal' in the Oxford Learners' Dictionary).
