If you pilfer, you usually steal a relatively small amount of something, or something of small value. For example, taking paper-clips or envelopes or CDs from the office where you work would be pilfering; if you took a computer, it wouldn't.

Nice example:

Spokane Sheriff's deputies arrested a Spokane Valley man last Thursday after he allegedly attempted to pilfer the knobs from an antique radio in the lobby of the Spokane County Public Safety Building.
