For the server, we can use OpenIM.

That's definitely the goal. I know other folks who have used Jive Software's Smack library[1] with success so that's what I'll be using.

I will note that we have serious issues keeping OpenIM 1.2.1 running at our site.
I've tried without luck to reach the developers or locate where the project landed.

If we're going to use a server for testing I've had good experiences with administrating the Jive Messenger Jabber server so I guess that's what I'll use.

But in general I think that it might be wise to take the same approach as we did with the mail sending components by having a simple interface for sending messages and then provide a simple version for testing that doesn't require a real server but instead just keeps them in a list for later assertion.
