I've found this to be very slow - perhaps it needs to lazy load more relationships

IMHO this has been really improved with 1.1 final and some webwork tuning.
Since the migration vmbuild home page is faster.

Here's a sample timings that have been experienced using 1.1

3 groups: 1 second
12 groups: 2-3 seconds
19 groups: 6-8 seconds
29 groups: 21-26 seconds
30 groups: 31-46 seconds

Attached patch.

I removed a lot of codes that I think are not needed. I'm not sure why they're there though since I don't think they were used in the page.
